Maddu: "Medicine" or "Magic spell." Pronounce the 'dd' as a hard, stressed sound.
Ramādēvi: Addressing Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, as the mediator who can grant this "medicine."

ಶ್ರೀ ಪುರಂದರದಾಸರ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಏಕಾಗ್ರತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತರಂಗದ ಭಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಬೇಡುವ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ 'ಮದ್ದು' ಎಂದರೆ ಕೇವಲ ಔಷಧಿಯಲ್ಲ, ಬದಲಿಗೆ ಸಂಸಾರವೆಂಬ ರೋಗವನ್ನು ಗುಣಪಡಿಸುವ ಮತ್ತು ಚಂಚಲ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಹತೋಟಿಗೆ ತರುವ 'ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಉಪಾಯ' ಎಂದರ್ಥ.
ಸಾರಾಂಶ (Summary)
ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಚಂಚಲವಾಗಿ ಲೌಕಿಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳತ್ತ ಓಡುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಹಾಕಿ ಸದಾ ಕಾಲ ಆ ಮುದ್ದು ಬಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಪಾದಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆನಿಲ್ಲುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಲು ನನಗೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ತಂತ್ರ ಅಥವಾ ಮದ್ದು (ಉಪಾಯ) ತಿಳಿಯದಾಗಿದೆ. ಎಲೈ ರಮಾದೇವಿಯೇ (ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ), ನನ್ನ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಹರಿಕಥೆಯಾಗುವಂತೆ, ನನ್ನ ಸಂಸಾರದ ಮೋಹವು ತೊಲಗುವಂತೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಾನು ಸದಾ ಪುರಂದರವಿಠಲನನ್ನು ಸ್ತುತಿಸುವಂತೆ ನೀನೇ ನನಗೆ ದಾರಿ ತೋರಿಸು ಎಂದು ದಾಸರು ಈ ಹಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಮುದ್ದು ಬಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣನಲಿ ಮನ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವಂತೆ ||
ಅರ್ಥ: "ಓ ಮುದ್ದು ರಮಾದೇವಿಯೇ (ಮಹಾಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ), ಚಂಚಲವಾದ ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಆ ಮುದ್ದು ಬಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಧ್ಯಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸದಾ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿ (ಸ್ಥಿರವಾಗಿ) ನಿಲ್ಲುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಲು ನನಗೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಮದ್ದು ಅಥವಾ ತಂತ್ರಗಳು ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಂತಹ ಸ್ಥಿರವಾದ ಭಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ನೀನೇ ನನಗೆ ಕರುಣಿಸು."

ರಚನೆ ಮಾಡುವಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ತಿ ನಿಲ್ಲೋ ಹಾಗೆ ||
ಅರ್ಥ: "ನಾನು ಆಡುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಮಾತುಗಳು (ವಚನಗಳು) ಆ ವಾಸುದೇವನ ಕಥೆಗಳೇ ಆಗಿರಲಿ. ಭಗವಂತನ ಗುಣಗಾನ ಮಾಡುವಾಗ ಮತ್ತು ಆತನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆಯುವಾಗ ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಅನುರಕ್ತವಾಗುವಂತೆ (ರಕ್ತಿ/ಆಸಕ್ತಿ) ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸು."
ಚರಣ 2
ಸಂತೆ ನೆರಹಿದ ಸತಿಸುತರು ತನ್ನವರೆಂಬ |
ಭ್ರಾಂತಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ನಿಶ್ಚಿಂತನಾಗೋ ಹಾಗೆ ||
ಅರ್ಥ: "ಸಂತೆಯಂತೆ ಸೇರಿರುವ ಈ ಹೆಂಡತಿ, ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಸಾರವು ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ 'ನನ್ನವರು' ಎಂಬ ಭ್ರಮೆಯನ್ನು ನಾನು ಬಿಡಬೇಕು. ಈ ಲೌಕಿಕ ಬಂಧನಗಳ ಮೋಹದಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತನಾಗಿ, ಕೇವಲ ಭಗವಂತನನ್ನೇ ನಂಬಿ ನಾನು ನಿಶ್ಚಿಂತನಾಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡು."
ಚರಣ 3
ಎನ್ನೊಡೆಯ ಸಿರಿ ಪುರಂದರವಿಠಲನ್ನ |
ಸನ್ಮತಿಯಿಂದ ನಾ ಹಾಡಿ ಪಾಡೋ ಹಾಗೆ ||
ಅರ್ಥ: "ನನ್ನ ಒಡೆಯನಾದ ಆ ಸಿರಿ ಪುರಂದರವಿಠಲನನ್ನು ಸದಾ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯಿಂದ (ಸನ್ಮತಿ), ಯಾವುದೇ ಪ್ರತಿಫಲಾಪೇಕ್ಷೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಹಾಡಿ ಹೊಗಳುವಂತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಆತನ ಸ್ಮರಣೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಕಾಲ ಕಳೆಯುವಂತೆ ನನಗೆ ಹರಸು."

This composition by Sri Purandara Dasa is a beautiful prayer for mental focus. In this context, the word "Maddu" (medicine) doesn't refer to a physical cure, but to a "spiritual remedy" or "secret technique" to calm a restless mind and fix it upon the Divine.
Summary
The poet addresses Goddess Rama Devi (Lakshmi), the consort of Vishnu, asking for her grace to stabilize his wandering mind. He confesses that he doesn't know the "medicine" or the trick to keep his thoughts from straying toward worldly attachments. He prays that every word he speaks becomes a story of the Lord, that his attachment to his family (which he compares to a temporary crowd at a market) fades away, and that he remains "worry-less" (Nishchinta), forever singing the glories of Purandara Vitthala.

Rachane maduvalli rakti nillo hage ||
Meaning: "May every word (Vachana) I utter be nothing but the story of Vasudeva. When I compose or speak of His glories, let my heart be filled with deep passion (Rakti) and interest, never wavering from the subject of the Divine."
Verse 2
Sante nerahida satisutaru tannavaremba |
Bhranti bittu nishchintanago hage ||
Meaning: "This family—spouse and children—is like a temporary crowd gathered at a weekly market (Sante). Help me lose the delusion (Bhranti) that they 'belong' to me forever. Let me let go of these worldly anxieties and become truly 'thoughtless' (Nishchinta), anchored only in God."
Verse 3
Ennodeya siri Purandara Vitthalanna |
Sanmatiyinda na hadi pado hage ||
Meaning: "Bless me so that I may always sing and praise my Master, the glorious Purandara Vitthala, with a pure and noble mind (Sanmati), spending my life in His constant service."
