Pronunciation Guide

ಈ 'ಶ್ರೀ ಉಡುಪಿ ಯಾತ್ರೆ ಸುಳಾದಿ'ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಜಯದಾಸರು ಉಡುಪಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಮಹಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನ ದರ್ಶನ ಭಾಗ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಭಕ್ತಿಭಾವದಿಂದ ಕೊಂಡಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಯಾವ ಪುಣ್ಯದ ಫಲವಾಗಿ ತಮಗೆ ಈ ಯಾತ್ರೆಯ ಯೋಗ ಒದಗಿಬಂದಿದೆಯೋ ತಮಗಂತೂ ತಿಳಿಯದು ಎಂದು ವಿನೀತರಾಗಿ ನುಡಿಯುತ್ತಾ, ಉಡುಪಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವು ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾದುದು ಎಂದು ಸಾರಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಂದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡುವುದೇ ಪರಮ ಭಾಗ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಲಾಭ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ, ಈ ಯಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಭಕ್ತರು ತಮ್ಮ ಸಕಲ ಕುಲ-ಗೋತ್ರದವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮುಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಸಾರವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಕಾವಾನು ಕೃಪೆಯಿಂದ ಧರ್ಮ ಮಾರ್ಗವು ತೋರಿ ॥ 1 ॥
ಭಾವಾರ್ಥ:
ನನಗೆ ಈ ಉಡುಪಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಯಾತ್ರೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಯೋಗ ಬಂದಿರುವುದು ಪೂರ್ವ ಜನ್ಮದ ಯಾವ ಪುಣ್ಯದ (ಸುಕೃತ) ಫಲವೋ, ಯಾವ ಗುರುಗಳ ಕೃಪೆಯೋ, ಯಾವ ಗೋತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಮಹತ್ವವೋ ಅಥವಾ ಯಾವ ಸತ್ಪುತ್ರನು ಮಾಡಿದ ಸತ್ಕರ್ಮದ ಪುಣ್ಯವೋ ನನಗಂತೂ ತಿಳಿಯದು. ನನ್ನ ಪತ್ನಿ ನಡೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಸದ್ಗುಣವೋ, ಸಜ್ಜನ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದವೋ, ಬಂಧುಗಳು ತೋರಿಸಿದ ದಾರಿಯೋ, ಯಾವ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸಾಧನೆಯೋ ಅಥವಾ ಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳು ಪ್ರೇರಿಸಿದ ಭಾಗ್ಯವೋ, ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದರಿಂದ ನನಗೆ ಈ ಯೋಗ ಲಭಿಸಿತು ಎಂಬುದು ನನಗೊಂದು ತಿಳಿಯದು; ಅಂತರಂಗವನ್ನು ಬಲ್ಲ ಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳೇ ಇದರ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗತಿಯನ್ನು ಬಲ್ಲರು. ವಾಯುದೇವರ (ಪಾವಮಾನಿ) ಮಧ್ವಮತವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ, ನಿತ್ಯವೂ ಪವಿತ್ರರಾಗಿ ಈ ಉಡುಪಿ ಯಾತ್ರೆಗೆ ನಡೆದುಬಂದ ಭಕ್ತರ ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯವನ್ನು ದೇವತೆಗಳೇ ಕೊಂಡಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಂತಹ ಜೀವನ್ಮುಕ್ತರು ಮುಂದೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಇಡೀ ಕುಲ-ಗೋತ್ರದವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮುಕ್ತಿಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ (ಕೈವಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ) ಸುಖವಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜೀವ ಮತ್ತು ಈಶ್ವರರ ಭೇದ ತತ್ವವನ್ನು ಸಾರಿದ ಮಧ್ವಮುನಿಗಳಿಂದ ಪೂಜೆಗೊಂಡ, ನಮ್ಮ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಪತಿಯಾದ ವಿಜಯವಿಠ್ಠಲರಾಯನು ಕೃಪೆಯಿಂದ ನಮಗೆ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮಾರ್ಗವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಿ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

ಅಖಿಲ ವೈಭವದಿಂ ಮೆರೆದ ತರುವಾಯ ॥ 2 ॥
ಭಾವಾರ್ಥ:
ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಯಿಯ ನಂತರವೇ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ರಕ್ಷಕರು ಬರುವುದು; ತಂದೆಯ ನಂತರವೇ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಬೋಧಕರು (ಗುರುಗಳು); ಆಹಾರದ (ಭುಕ್ತಿಯ) ನಂತರವೇ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸುಖಗಳು; ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯ (ಸೌಖ್ಯದ) ನಂತರವೇ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಭೋಗಗಳು; ಏಕಾದಶಿ ವ್ರತದ (ಹರಿದಿನದ) ನಂತರವೇ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ವ್ರತಗಳು; ಉಡುಪಿಯ ನಂತರವೇ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳು; ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯ ನಂತರವೇ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ದೇವತಾ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳು; ಶ್ರೀಮನ್ನ್ಯಾಯಸುಧಾ ಗ್ರಂಥದ ನಂತರವೇ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳು; ವೈಷ್ಣವ ತೇಜಸ್ಸಿನ (ವರ್ಚಸದ) ನಂತರವೇ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ತೇಜಸ್ಸುಗಳು ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, ಉಡುಪಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಖಿಲ ವೈಭವದಿಂದ ಮೆರೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಕಲ ಜಗದೊಡೆಯನಾದ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣ ವಿಜಯವಿಠ್ಠಲನ ನಂತರವೇ ಬೇರೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಬರುತ್ತವೆ.

ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಮನೆಯಿದೆಯೋ, ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಆತನ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಸ್ಥಾನವಿದೆಯೋ, ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಆತನ ದಿವ್ಯ ಮೂರ್ತಿ, ಕೀರ್ತಿ, ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ನಾಮಗಾಯನ, ಧ್ಯಾನ, ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ, ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಯಾತ್ರೆ, ಆತನಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ, ಆತನ ದಿವ್ಯ ನಾಮಸ್ಮರಣೆ, ಆತನ ಆರಾಧನೆ, ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಕಥಾ ಶ್ರವಣ ಮತ್ತು ಆತನ ಪಾದತೀರ್ಧ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಸಾದಗಳು ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತವೆಯೋ — ಅಂತಹ ಉಡುಪಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸೊಬಗು ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಮತ್ಯಾವ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲೂ ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಇಂತಹ ಪರಮ ವೈಷ್ಣವ ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ವಾತಾವರಣವನ್ನು ನಾನು ಬೇರೆಲ್ಲೂ ಕಂಡಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಸಮಸ್ತ ಕೀರ್ತಿಯೂ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೇ ಸಲ್ಲಬೇಕು; ಅವರನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ನಮಗೆ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ದೈವವಿಲ್ಲ. ಉಡುಪಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವು ಇಡೀ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಸಕಲ ಪುಣ್ಯಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳ ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಶಿರೋರತ್ನದಂತೆ ಹೊಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಈ ರಹಸ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬಲ್ಲವನಿಗೆ ಮುಕ್ತಿಯ ಫಲವು ದೂರವಿಲ್ಲ. ಉಡುಪಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ಶಕ್ತಿಶಾಲಿಯಾದ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣ ವಿಜಯವಿಠ್ಠಲನ ಅಪಾರ ಮಹಿಮೆಗೆ ನನ್ನ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರಗಳು.

ಜಡಮತಿ ಕಳೆವ ವಿಜಯವಿಠ್ಠಲ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಬಿಡನೋ ಬಿಡನೋ ತನ್ನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದವನ ॥ 4 ॥
ಭಾವಾರ್ಥ:
ಯಾವನು ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಯಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೋ, ಅವನು ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲಿರುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳ ಯಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ ಪುಣ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿತ್ಯವೂ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಎಲೈ ಜನರೇ, ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಯಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪದೇ ಮಾಡಿರಿ. ಈ ಯಾತ್ರೆಗೆ ನೀವು ಖರ್ಚು ಮಾಡುವ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಕಾಸಿಗೂ ಹೆದರಬೇಡಿ; ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡುವ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಕಾಸಿಗೂ ಅಡಿಗಡಿಗೆ ನೂರು ಪಟ್ಟು (ಮಡಿ) ಫಲ ಲಭಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಯಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡದಿದ್ದರೆ, ರಾಜಮುದ್ರೆ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಹಣವು ಹೇಗೆ ಮೌಲ್ಯ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆಯೋ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಭಕ್ತರು ಗಳಿಸಿದ ಪುಣ್ಯವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ವ್ಯರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಕೆಟ್ಟುಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಜಡಬುದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನು (ಅಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು) ದೂರಮಾಡುವ ವಿಜಯವಿಠ್ಠಲ ಕೃಷ್ಣನು, ತನ್ನನ್ನು ನಂಬಿ ತನ್ನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಭಕ್ತನನ್ನು ಎಂದಿಗೂ ಕೈಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ನಿದರುಶನ ಯಾತ್ರಿ ಇಹದಲ್ಲಿ ಫಲವ್ಯಾಕೆ ॥ 5 ॥
ಭಾವಾರ್ಥ:
ನನಗೆ ನಿಜವಾದ ಪರಮ ಭಾಗ್ಯವೆಂದರೆ ಇದೇ ಆಗಿದೆ; ಯದುಕುಲ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠನಾದ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನ ದಿವ್ಯ ಚರಣಗಳನ್ನು ಕಣ್ಣಾರೆ ನೋಡುವುದೇ ಅತ್ಯುನ್ನತ ಭಾಗ್ಯ. ಶ್ರೀಮನ್ನ್ಯಾಯಸುಧಾ ಗ್ರಂಥವನ್ನು ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿದ ಮಹಾತ್ಮರ ಪಾದಗಳ ದರ್ಶನ ಲಭಿಸುವುದೇ ನನಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಲಾಭ. ಭಗವಂತನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಪಾದ, ಹಸ್ತ, ಕಣ್ಣು, ಮೂಗು, ಮುಖ, ಕಿವಿ ಮತ್ತು ನಾಲಿಗೆಗಳು ಆ ದೇವರ ಸೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಇಂದು ನನ್ನ ಜೀವನದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಾರ್ಥಕ ದಿನವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದರ್ಶನದಿಂದ ನನ್ನ ಹೃದಯವು ಆನಂದದಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿಹೋಗಿದೆ. ಮಧುಸೂದನನಾದ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ವಿಜಯವಿಠ್ಠಲರಾಯನ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷ ದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡುವ ಈ ಉಡುಪಿ ಯಾತ್ರೆಯ ಫಲವು ಕಣ್ಣೆದುರಿಗೇ ಇರುವಾಗ, ಇಹಲೋಕದ ಬೇರೆ ಕ್ಷುಲ್ಲಕ ಫಲಗಳ ಆಸೆ ನನಗೇಕೆ?

Meaning:
I do not know by what past merit (Sukruta), by the grace of which spiritual master, by the fortune of being born into whichever lineage, or by the righteous deeds of which noble son this journey to Udupi has been bestowed upon me. I cannot tell if it is due to the virtue of my devoted wife, the blessings of saintly scholars, the direction shown by my kinsmen, the spiritual disciplines practiced in holy centers, or the fortunes prompted by enlightened souls. I am completely unaware of the exact reason, but the seers who know the inner reality understand the true cause. The deities themselves applaud the immense fortune of those devotees who follow the path of Vayu (Paavamani / Madhva philosophy) and arrive at Udupi with pure hearts. Such liberated souls (Jivanmuktas) will rejoice eternally in the highest liberation (Kaivalya) along with their entire ancestry. Lord Vijaya Vitthala, the Lord of Lakshmi who dwells within us and was worshipped by Sage Madhva, protects us by revealing the path of righteousness out of His pure mercy.

Meaning:
In this universe, all other protectors come only after a mother; all other teachers and guides come only after a father; all other comforts come only after food (Bhukthi); all other luxuries come only after health and peace (Saukhya); all other spiritual vows come only after the sacred day of Lord Hari (Ekadashi); all other holy lands come only after Udupi; all other divine images come only after the form of Lord Krishna; all other scriptures come only after the Sriman Nyaya Sudha text; and all other spiritual brilliance comes only after the radiance of a Vaishnava devotee. In the very same manner, all else in existence comes only after Lord Sri Krishna Vijaya Vitthala, who shines in Udupi with complete, infinite majesty.

Where else can one find the home of Krishna, the sacred seat of Krishna, His divine idol, His boundless fame, the singing of His glories, the meditation upon Him, His hymns, the pilgrimages dedicated to Him, the salutations offered to Him, the chanting of His holy name, His worship, the hearing of His pastimes, and His sacred foot-water (Teertha) and food offering (Prasada)? The breathtaking beauty found here in Udupi is simply unparalleled anywhere else in the world; I have never witnessed such an intense atmosphere of Vaishnava devotion. The entire credit for this glory belongs solely to Sri Madhvacharya; we recognize no other supreme deity besides him. The holy land of Udupi shines like a crest jewel atop the heads of all sacred pilgrimage destinations. For the one who understands this spiritual secret, the reward of liberation is never far away. Salutations over and over to the immense majesty of the powerful Lord Sri Krishna Vijaya Vitthala of Udupi.

Anyone who undertakes a pilgrimage to Udupi daily reaps the collective spiritual merit of visiting every single holy destination on the planet. Therefore, O people, ensure that you make this journey to Udupi. Do not hesitate or worry about spending even a single coin on this pilgrimage; for every single coin spent here, a hundredfold return of spiritual fruit is secured at every step. If one fails to visit Udupi, all the accumulated religious merits go to waste, just like a massive amount of wealth that lacks the official royal seal of validity. Lord Vijaya Vitthala Krishna, who destroys our dullness of intellect and spiritual ignorance, will never, ever abandon the devotee who seeks refuge and comes close to Him.

Meaning:
This is it—this is the true, supreme fortune of my life! To behold the divine feet of the best among the Yadu clan, Lord Krishna, is the highest fortune imaginable. To receive the sight of the feet of those great saints who constantly study the Sudha scriptures is the absolute greatest gain for me. The feet, hands, eyes, nose, face, ears, and tongue given to me by the Creator have met their ultimate purpose today by engaging in His service and vision; this is a day of absolute fulfillment. My heart is completely overflowing with bliss through this sight. When this pilgrimage to Udupi yields the direct, visible presence of King Krishna Vijaya Vitthala, the destroyer of Madhu, why should I yearn for any other trivial rewards of this material world?
