A Quick Note on Pronunciation
ḷ: Retroflex 'l' (tongue curls back, as in the Kannada word Kannada).
ṇ: Retroflex 'n' (as in Vishunu).
sh: Soft 'sh' (as in Shiva).
ṣ: Hard 'sh' (as in Vishnu).
Retroflex 'L' (ḷ): When you see ḷ (as in Karuḷu or Koraḷoḷiṭṭa), curl your tongue back to touch the roof of your mouth; it is deeper than a standard 'L'.
Short vs. Long Vowels: Vowels with a bar (ā, ē, ī, ō, ū) are held twice as long as short vowels (a, e, i, o, u); for example, nā (long) vs. na (short).
The Nasal 'N' (ṇ): For ṇ (as in Brahmāṇḍa), touch your tongue to the top-back of your palate to produce a heavy, resonant 'N' sound.

ಶ್ರೀ ಪುರಂದರದಾಸರು ವಿರಚಿಸಿರುವ ಈ 'ಗರುಡಾದ್ರಿ ನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವರ ಸುಳಾದಿ' ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಪರಾಕಾಷ್ಠೆ ಮತ್ತು ಭಗವಂತನ ಭೀಕರ ರೂಪದ ವರ್ಣನೆಯಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದೆ. ಇದರ ಸಾರಾಂಶ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿ ಚರಣದ ಅರ್ಥ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ:
ಸಾರಾಂಶ (Summary)
ಈ ಸುಳಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಸಾರ್ಯರು ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪುವನ್ನು ಸಂಹರಿಸಿದ ನಂತರದ ಉಗ್ರ ನರಸಿಂಹನ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುವಂತೆ ವರ್ಣಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಭಗವಂತನ ಗರ್ಜನೆ, ಉರಿಯುವ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಿಶ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ದೇವತೆಗಳೇ ಹೆದರುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ, ಪುರಂದರದಾಸರು ಒಬ್ಬ ಭಕ್ತನಾಗಿ "ನಿನ್ನ ಈ ಭಯಂಕರ ರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ನಾನು ಅಂಜುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ" ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಲೇ ಅವನ ಕೃಪೆಗೆ ಮೊರೆಯಿಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದನ ಮೇಲಿರುವ ದೇವನ ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ಮರಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಶರಣಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.

೧. ಧೃವತಾಳ: ಭಗವಂತನ ಉಗ್ರ ರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ಭಯ
ಅಂಜುವೇ ನಾ ನೀ ಸಿಂಗದ ಮುಖದವ...
ಸಿಂಹದ ಮುಖ ಹೊತ್ತು, ಆಗಾಗ ಹುಂಕಾರ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಘರ್ಜಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ನನಗೆ ಭಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಬಾಯಿ ತೆರೆದು ಗದ್ಗದಿತನಾಗಿ ಕಿಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾರುತ್ತಾ, ಕಿವಿಗಳನ್ನು ನೆಟ್ಟಗೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಮೇಲೆ ಬೀಳಲು ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿರುವ ನಿನ್ನ ರೂಪ ನಡುಕ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಎಲೈ ಪುರಂದರವಿಠ್ಠಲನೇ, ನೀನು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ದೈವವಲ್ಲ, ಉರಿಮಾರಿಯಂತೆ (ಅತ್ಯಂತ ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ/ಉಗ್ರ) ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀಯ, ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಿಸುವೆ.
೨. ಮಟ್ಟತಾಳ: ಸಂಹರಿಸಿದ ಮೇಲೂ ಶಾಂತನಾಗದ ಕೋಪ

ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪುವಿನ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ಸೀಳಿ, ಅವನ ಕರುಳನ್ನೇ ಮಾಲೆಯಾಗಿ ಧರಿಸಿದ ಮೇಲೂ ನಿನ್ನ ಕೋಪವೇಕೆ ತಣಿಯುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ? ಬೆಂಕಿಯನ್ನು ಏಕೆ ಉಗುಳುತ್ತಿರುವೆ? ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಏಕೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ? ನಿನ್ನ ಮುಂದೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ-ಶಿವನೇ ಅಲ್ಪರಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ, ನಿನ್ನ ಪರಮ ಭಕ್ತ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದ ಬಂದಾಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅವನನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ಮುದ್ದಾಡುತ್ತೀಯಲ್ಲವೇ, ಆ ನಿನ್ನ ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯವೇ ನಮಗೆ ಗತಿ.
೩. ತ್ರಿವಿಡಿತಾಳ: ವಿಶ್ವವನ್ನೇ ನಡುಗಿಸುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ
ಅಟ್ಟಹಾಸ ಕಬುಜಜಾಂಡ...
ನಿನ್ನ ಅಟ್ಟಹಾಸದ ಧ್ವನಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಂಡದ ತುಂಬೆಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ವನಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ನೀನು ಕಾಲಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಭೂಮಿಯೇ ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಿದೆ, ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳು ಉರುಳಿ ಬೀಳುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಅಷ್ಟದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳೂ ನಿನ್ನ ತೇಜಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಎಲೈ ದಿಟ್ಟ ನರಸಿಂಹನೇ, ಈ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿನಗೆ ಎದುರಾದವರು ಯಾರೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.
೪. ಅಟ್ಟತಾಳ: ಪ್ರಳಯ ಕಾಲದ ಅಬ್ಬರ
ಉರಿಮಾರಿ ಸಾಗರಗಳು ಸುರಿಯೆ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯಿಂದ...
ನಿನ್ನ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯಿಂದ ಉರಿಯುವ ಸಮುದ್ರಗಳೇ ಹೊರಬರುತ್ತಿವೆಯೇನೋ ಎಂಬಂತಿದೆ. ನಿನ್ನ ಈ ಉಗ್ರ ರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ಇಡೀ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಂಡವೇ ಸಿಡಿದು ಹೋಗುವಂತಿತ್ತು. ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದೇವನಿಗೂ ಇದು ಪ್ರಳಯ ಕಾಲವೆಂಬಂತೆ ಭಾಸವಾಯಿತು. ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ ಭಕ್ತ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದನು ಬಂದು ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಶಾಂತಗೊಳಿಸದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಈ ಜಗತ್ತೇ ಅಳಿದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.
೫. ಆದಿತಾಳ: ದೈವಿಕ ಲೀಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಭಯ
ಹಿರಣ್ಯ ಕಶ್ಯಪವಿನುದರ ಬಗಿದುಗರಿಲಿ ಸರಸವಾಡಿದಿರಾ...
ಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶಿಪುವಿನ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ಸೀಳಿ ಅವನ ರಕ್ತದೊಂದಿಗೆ ನೀನು ಸರಸವಾಡಿದ (ಆಡಿದ) ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ನಾನು ಅಂಜುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಗರುಡಾಚಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ನರಹರಿಯೇ, ಪರಶಿವನಿಂದಲೇ ಪೂಜಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಪುರಂದರವಿಠ್ಠಲನೇ, ನಿನ್ನ ಆ ಭೀಕರ ಲೀಲೆಗೆ ಶರಣು.
೬. ಜತೆ: ಮಂಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ಶರಣಾಗತಿ

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನರಸಿಂಹನೇ, ಪುರಂದರವಿಠ್ಠಲನೇ, ಶರಣಾಗತ ಭಕ್ತ ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದನನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದವನೇ ನಿನಗೆ ಜಯವಾಗಲಿ. ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಸಲಹು.

"I am terrified of You, the one with the face of a lion. You roar and grunt repeatedly, making the heavens shake. I tremble as You open Your wide jaws and gasp for breath in fury. I am scared as You growl and emit sparks of fire from Your eyes. When You prick up Your ears and prepare to pounce, my heart sinks. O Siri Muddu Narasimha Purandara Vitthala, You appear like a god of destruction (Urimari), and I bow to You in fear."
2. Matta Tala: The Unrelenting Wrath
Hiranyakashipuvinna udara bagida balika...
"Even after ripping open the belly of Hiranyakashipu and wearing his intestines as a garland around Your neck, why does Your anger not subside? Why are You still breathing fire? Why aren't You speaking tenderly to Your consort, Lakshmi? You have made even Brahma and Shiva look insignificant before Your power. Yet, O Purandara Vitthala, the moment child Prahlada approaches, You soften and embrace him—why this sudden change from fury to fatherly love?"
3. Trivida Tala: Shaking the Universe
Attahasa kabujajanda...
"Your thunderous laughter echoes throughout the cosmic egg (universe). As You stamp Your feet, the earth tilts and sinks. Mountains crumble and roll away like tiny pebbles. Your brilliance illuminates all eight directions. O brave and beautiful Narasimha Purandara Vitthala, who in this entire universe can dare to stand against You?"
4. Atta Tala: The Threat of Universal Dissolution
Urimari sagaragalu suriye naligeyinda...
"Oceans of fire seem to pour from Your tongue as You lick Your lips. All living and non-living beings are caught in the wake of Your movement. The entire universe was on the verge of shattering; it felt like the final Great Dissolution (Pralaya) had arrived. If the devotee Prahlada had not stood there to calm You, the cosmos would have surely split into pieces."
5. Adi Tala: The Play of the Man-Lion
Hiranya kashyappavinudara bagidugarili sarasavadidira...
"After tearing open the belly of Hiranyakashipu, You played with his blood and entrails as if it were a sport. O Narahari, dweller of the Garuda hills (Garudachala), I am frightened by this divine play. O Purandara Vitthala, worshipped by Lord Shiva, I am in awe and fear of the way You toyed with the demon's end."
