ಈ ಕವಿತೆಯು ಮಕರ ಸಂಕ್ರಾಂತಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಸಡಗರ ಮತ್ತು ಉತ್ತರಾಯಣ ಪುಣ್ಯಕಾಲದ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಜನವರಿ ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂರ್ಯನು ಧನು ರಾಶಿಯಿಂದ ಮಕರ ರಾಶಿಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುವಾಗ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಂಟಾಗುವ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಇದು ಎತ್ತಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

೧. ಪಲ್ಲವಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮೊದಲ ಚರಣ: ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಪಯಣ
ಸೂರ್ಯನು ಇಂದಿನಿಂದ ಮುಂದಿನ ಆರು ತಿಂಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಉತ್ತರದ ಕಡೆಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಪಯಣವನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸೂರ್ಯನ ರಥಕ್ಕೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿದ ಕುದುರೆಗಳ ಗಾಂಭೀರ್ಯದ ನಡಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿರಿ. ಇದು ಚಳಿಯ ದಿನಗಳು ಮುಗಿದು, ಮಕರ ಸಂಕ್ರಮಣದ ಮೂಲಕ ಸುಗ್ಗಿಯ ಕಾಲವು ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವ ಸಮಯ. ಈ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಎಳ್ಳು-ಬೆಲ್ಲಗಳನ್ನು ಮಿಶ್ರಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ.
೨. ಎರಡನೇ ಮತ್ತು ಮೂರನೇ ಚರಣ: ಸಂಭ್ರಮ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ
ಮನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾವಿನ ಎಲೆಯ ತಳಿರು-ತೋರಣಗಳ ಅಲಂಕಾರ, ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ರುಚಿಕರವಾದ ಹುಗ್ಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಹೂರಣದ ಅಡುಗೆಯ ಸಡಗರ. ಹೊಸ ಬಟ್ಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ತೊಟ್ಟು, ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೊಬ್ಬರು ಉಡುಗೊರೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸಮಯವಿದು. ಈ ಶುಭ ಘಳಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ, ಜಪ ಮತ್ತು ಪಿತೃಗಳಿಗೆ ತರ್ಪಣ ನೀಡುವುದು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪುಣ್ಯದಾಯಕ. ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಎಳ್ಳು-ಬೆಲ್ಲದ ಸವಿಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವ ಹಂಬಲದಲ್ಲಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.
೩. ನಾಲ್ಕನೇ ಮತ್ತು ಐದನೇ ಚರಣ: ಸದ್ಗುಣಗಳ ಅಳವಡಿಕೆ
ಎಳ್ಳು-ಬೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಾ, ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನೇ ಆಡಬೇಕು. ಸುಳ್ಳು ಹೇಳುವುದನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಸತ್ಯವಂತರಾಗಿ ಜನರ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲಬೇಕು. ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಪಿತಾಮಹರು ಕೂಡ ಈ ಪುಣ್ಯಕಾಲಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕಾದಿದ್ದರು. ಹರಿಯನ್ನು ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತಾ ಪುಣ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಂಚಯಿಸಲು ಇದು ಸಕಾಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸೋಮಾರಿತನ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬೇಗ ಎದ್ದು ಹಬ್ಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳಿ.
೪. ಆರನೇ ಮತ್ತು ಏಳನೇ ಚರಣ: ಏಕತೆಯ ಭಾವ ಮತ್ತು ಅಡುಗೆ
ಉತ್ತರಾಯಣದ ಈ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ "ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಒಂದೇ" ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆಯನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿತ್ತಬೇಕು. ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಭೇದ-ಭಾವಗಳು ಹಬ್ಬದ ಸಂಭ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರಗಿ ಹೋಗಲಿ. ಮನಸ್ಸು ಉಬ್ಬಿ ಹರಡುವ ಈ ಸಂಕ್ರಾಂತಿಯಂದು ಮೈಸೂರು ಭಾಗದ ವಿಶೇಷ ಅಡುಗೆಯಾದ 'ಒತ್ತು ಶಾವಿಗೆ'ಯ ರುಚಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಬ್ಬವು ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಮನಗಳಿಗೆ ಇಳಿದು ಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ.

The Sun begins his northward path;
With the arrival of the harvest (Suggi) and the festive celebration,

With decorations of fresh leaves (talisman) and festive porridges (Huggi),
There is a new surge of energy, like a springing fountain;
Wearing new clothes and finding joy in giving,

*Why of late, Pongal falls on 15th of January every year, as against the usual 14th of January in the earlier years? *
Know a small Time calculation process.
Normally, Makar Sankrant or Pongal Festival should fall on 14th of January every year. Most of us, since childhood, were observing it on 14th of January every year. Isn't it? In fact, from the year 1935 onwards, till 2007, Pongal was falling on 14th January only every year. (Prior to that, know that, from 1862 to 1934, it was falling on 13th of January every year.) But from 2008 onwards, Pongal has been falling on 15th of January every year. Till the Year 2080, it will fall on 15th of January only every year. From the year 2081 onwards, it will fall on 16th of January every year for the next 72 years, that is, till 2153.
Why this happens?
As per the Indian Almanac Time calculation, Sun enters the Zodiac sign of Makara Raasi (from Dhanur Raasi), 20 Minutes late every year, as compared to the English time or the World Time. Thus, once in 3 years, Sun enters the Makar Raasi late by one hour. That means, in every cycle of 72 years, Sun enters Makar Raasi late by one day. Got it?
(Also know that Indian Almanac Time is so accurate that our Pandits can accurately tell you today when exactly Solar or Lunar eclipse will take place after 5000 years. That also means that Universe works strictly as per precision timings which is why we can confidently calculate today when exactly will eclipse occur after 5000 years.)
